"אַף עַל פִּי שֶׁרֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה וְיוֹם הַכִּפּוּרִים בָּאִים לְזִכָּרוֹן וּלְכַפָּרָה, אֲבָל סֻכּוֹת בָּא לְשִׂמְחָה וּלְהוֹדָאָה עַל שֶׁמִּלֵּא בָּתֵיהֶם כָּל טוּב בִּימֵי אֲסִיפָה."

בִּזְמַן שִׂמְחָתֵנוּ, עַנְנֵי הַכָּבוֹד
שׁוּב לֹא חִפּוּ עָלַי כְּמוֹ בַּמִּדְבָּר.
שָׁלוֹשׁ פְּעָמִים הֻטַּל הַצִּוּוּי לִשְׂמֹחַ
מָנָה כְּנֶגֶד מָנָה:
שְׁלוֹשָׁה אָבְדָנִים, וְעוֹד אֶחָד –
נֶבֶט שֶׁנָּשַׁר טֶרֶם אָסִיף.
בִּשְׁמִינִי עֲצֶרֶת יִתְפַּלְּלוּ עַל הַמַּיִם
בַּגַּן יָשִׁירוּ עַל מִטְרִיָּה וְנַחְלִיאֵלִי
עַנְנֵי הַכָּבוֹד יִהְיוּ לְעַנְנֵי-כֹּבֶד, הֲרֵי-גֶּשֶׁם
וְיִפְרְקוּ אֶת מַשָּׂאָם.
וְרַק אֶצְלִי –
הֶעָנָן יִשָּׁאֵר תָּלוּי
וְהַקֵּן מְרֻקָּן
וְהַשְּׁדֵמָה צְמֵאָה
בַּפַּעַם הָרְבִיעִית.

“Although Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur come for remembrance and atonement, Sukkot comes for joy and thanksgiving, for having filled their homes with every good thing during the days of gathering in the harvest.”

In the midst of our Sukkot rejoicing,
The mists of clouds of glory did not shelter me,
As they had in the wilderness.
Three times the Torah calls to us to rejoice
But I, thrice, was aggrieved:
Three times lost, and once more—
A seedling that may not bloom.
On the eighth of Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, we pray for rain,
In school, tots sing of umbrellas and Nachlieli birds that
herald the winter.
But for me–the clouds of glory will be inglorious,
The clouds will release their burden.
Yet for me—the cloud overhangs
The nest will empty
And the field will thirst
For the fourth time.
