A Week of Learning and Action to Prevent Sexual Harm and Promote Sexual Safety

Together, we will stand with survivors of sexual assault and deepen our commitment to prevention and sexual safety in family and community life – for communities and individuals alike.
This year, once again, during the week when we read Parashat Vayishlach and the account of Dinah’s rape, we will make space for Dinah’s voice and acknowledge the sexual harm she endured. Drawing on her story, we will address sexual harm more broadly and explore its relevance to people of all genders and ages.
As we do each year, a range of communities and organizations will hold activities throughout the week dedicated to promoting sexual safety and preventing sexual harm.
During The Week of Dinah, we will study, converse, gather, and interpret the account of Dinah’s rape. In doing so, we will engage with the story, face the testimonies in our midst, and acknowledge the ongoing need to act with a shared sense of responsibility.

What Does the Name Shevet Dinah Mean?
Shevet Dinah is the new name of a coalition that brings together organizations and communities from across Jewish movements in Israel and the Diaspora. Together, they work to place sexual harm, sexual safety, community responsibility, and the need to resist silencing on the public agenda.
We chose to name this coalition after the thirteenth shevet descended from Jacob, the shevet not counted in the Torah, and to open its tent to the wider public, regardless of gender.
Dinah’s silenced voice, her isolation, and her experiences of captivity, torment, and rape stand before us. They compel us not simply to “turn the page” and leave the verses of this parasha behind, but to attend to her story and to every survivor in our midst.
We bear both personal and collective responsibility; together, as a shevet, we can offer support. We should see ourselves as carrying Shevet Dinah forward, the shevet that was never counted.
Why Now?
The need to stand with survivors is constant, and The Week of Dinah offers an annual opportunity to raise awareness. It is an opportunity to amplify survivors’ voices; to believe those who have endured sexual harassment, assault, and exploitation; and to remember that sexual harm does not occur only at the margins, but affects individuals, families, communities, and wider circles of life.
Collective action and the expression of community responsibility in confronting sexual harm embody a commitment to repair and lay the foundations for broader change, both in the near future and over the long term.
What Is The Week of Dinah?
The Week of Dinah is an annual initiative centered on Parashat Vayishlach and the biblical account of Dinah’s rape. Each year, the initiative dedicates this period to learning, dialogue, and action aimed at preventing sexual harm and strengthening sexual safety across the many spheres of our lives.
Throughout the week, communities in Israel and the Diaspora hold classes, sermons, professional training sessions, cultural events, prayer gatherings, and community activities, while making expert knowledge and practical tools more widely accessible.

*The Shevet Dinah Coalition initiative is undertaken with the recognition that this subject can be an ongoing trigger.
The content deals with sexual violence and may evoke emotional and physical responses.
Please listen to your heart and body when engaging with this topic, and participate in a way and at a pace that feels right for you.
The Shevet Dinah Coalition seeks to restore Dinah to our shared story, together with the story of sexual violence, silence, and the silencing of sexual violence. Our hope is to raise awareness and to build a collective culture with greater responsibility, less silencing, a greater ability to recognize and respond to sexual violence, and more support and professional referrals for survivors.
We have come together and will continue to draw strength from the support that has taken shape, and continues to take shape, through the very choice to speak out, to echo our commitment, and to act with responsibility.
